A TV backlight is a strip of LEDs mounted around the back of your television, facing the wall. The light bounces off the wall behind the screen and spreads outward, so the picture appears to extend past the edges of the panel.
That's the simple version. What complicates it is that two very different products are sold under the same name, and the difference only becomes obvious after you've bought one.
Why people fit a backlight in the first place
It reduces eye strain
Watching a bright screen in a dark room forces your eyes to keep adjusting between the picture and the blackness around it. Lighting the wall behind the screen narrows that gap, which is why bias lighting was standard in professional editing suites long before anyone sold it as a consumer product.
It makes the screen feel larger
Colour spilling onto the wall blurs the boundary between the picture and the room. A 55-inch TV with the wall lit behind it reads as noticeably bigger than the same TV against a bare wall.
It changes how the room feels
Most people buy the first time for the look and keep it for the comfort. Both are legitimate reasons.
The two kinds of TV backlight
Static LED strips
The cheapest option, usually powered from the TV's USB port and controlled by a small remote or a phone app. You pick a colour or a preset pattern, and it stays there. It doesn't know what's on screen and can't respond to it.
For pure bias lighting — a steady warm white behind the screen to cut eye strain — a static strip does the job. If that's all you want, it's honest value.
Screen sync backlights
A screen sync backlight reads your video signal and changes colour to match the picture, continuously, as you watch. An explosion on the left of the screen lights the left side of the wall orange. A blue underwater scene turns the whole wall blue.
This is a different product with a different job. It isn't a brighter static strip — it's lighting that participates in what you're watching.
How screen sync actually works
Three methods exist, and they aren't equivalent.
Camera-based systems clip a camera to your TV pointing at the screen. Cheap to make, but the camera sees reflections, room lighting and anything passing in front of it. Accuracy suffers.
Microphone-based systems react to sound rather than picture. The lights pulse to audio, which looks lively but has no relationship to what's actually on screen.
HDMI sync box systems sit in the signal path. Your source plugs into the box, the box plugs into the TV, and the box reads the video data directly before it reaches the screen. Nothing is being guessed at.

The one thing to check before you buy
Because the sync box sits between your source and your TV, you need an external device running through it — a Fire TV Stick, a set-top box, a Blu-ray player or a console.
If you only ever watch through your TV's own built-in apps, the signal never passes through the box and the lights have nothing to read. Is screen sync worth the difference?
If you want bias lighting and nothing more, a static strip is enough and there's no need to spend further.
If you watch films, play games, or want the room to respond to what's on screen, a static strip will disappoint you within a week. It's the same disappointment either way — the lights are on, but nothing is happening.

Common questions
Does a TV backlight damage the TV?
No. The strip mounts on the back panel and doesn't interfere with the screen or its cooling. Route the cable so it doesn't press against vents.
Does it work on any TV?
Screen sync works with any TV that has a spare HDMI input, because the sync box handles the signal rather than the television. The TV doesn't need to be smart.
How far from the wall should the TV sit?
Around 5 to 15 cm gives the light room to spread. Flush against the wall, the effect compresses into a thin outline.
Can I use it as a normal light?
Yes. Sync mode is one setting among several — the same strip runs static colours, scenes and schedules through the Smart Life app, with Alexa and Google Assistant supported.
