Best Sync Box for PS5 and Xbox Series X in India

A sync box for a TV backlight sits in the HDMI path. Your console plugs into the box, the box plugs into the TV, and everything your console outputs has to pass through it untouched.

For streaming that's undemanding. For a PS5 or Xbox Series X it isn't. What a sync box must pass through for console gaming

4K at 120Hz

Both current consoles support it, and a growing number of games run at it. This needs HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. An HDMI 2.0 box caps you at 4K 60Hz — the console will negotiate down without telling you, and unless you check the display settings you may never notice you lost it.

VRR — variable refresh rate

Matches your TV's refresh rate to the console's frame output, which removes screen tearing and smooths out frame drops. It's one of the biggest visual improvements of this console generation. A box that doesn't support VRR passthrough disables it entirely.

ALLM — auto low latency mode

Tells your TV to switch to game mode automatically when the console starts. Without passthrough, you either lose it or switch picture modes by hand every session.

HDR formats

Dolby Vision and HDR10 need to survive the trip. A box that mangles HDR metadata produces washed-out or over-dark images, and it's often blamed on the TV rather than the accessory causing it.

Audio

Dolby Atmos passthrough matters if you run a soundbar or receiver. Some sync boxes downmix audio, which is not something you want discovered mid-film.

The port problem nobody mentions

Most sync boxes have one HDMI input. If you own a console, that port is spoken for — and your set-top box, streaming stick or second console has nowhere to go.

In practice people either unplug and replug cables, or they route the other devices straight to the TV and lose sync lighting on everything except the console. Neither is what you bought the kit for.

Why camera and microphone sync don't work for gaming

Cheaper "sync" lighting doesn't read the HDMI signal at all.

Camera-based systems clip a camera to the TV pointing at the screen. They see room lighting, reflections and anything passing in front of the set. In a dark gaming room they're inconsistent, and the lag between action and light is visible.

Microphone-based systems pulse to sound rather than picture. Lively, but unrelated to what's on screen — an explosion behind you lights the same as one in front.

Before you order

Two things catch people out.

Your TV needs an HDMI 2.1 input too. A 2.1 sync box can't deliver 4K 120Hz to a TV that only has 2.0 ports. Check your TV's specification — many mid-range sets have 2.1 on one or two ports only, so use the right one.

Common questions

Will a sync box add input lag?

An HDMI 2.1 box passing the signal through adds no meaningful latency. Lag complaints almost always trace to camera-based systems or to a box forcing the console down to a lower mode.

Does it work with Nintendo Switch?

Yes. The Switch outputs 1080p, well within what any of these kits handle.

Can I keep my soundbar or receiver connected?
